HOUSTON — Houston Mayor John Whitmire is marking Labor Day by recognizing the millions of workers whose daily efforts help keep the city’s economy, communities and essential services running.
In a message shared Monday, Whitmire praised the dedication and resilience of Houston’s workforce, saying hardworking men and women across industries are helping move the city forward and making Houston stronger and more prosperous.
The Labor Day message comes as Whitmire’s administration faces growing attention over its record on wages, public-sector workers and organized labor.
Recent reporting by the Houston Chronicle described Whitmire as a strongly pro-labor mayor, pointing to a $1.5 billion settlement with the Houston Professional Firefighters Association, including hundreds of millions of dollars in back pay and salary increases. His administration has also backed a 36.5 percent pay increase for Houston police officers and supported higher minimum-wage measures.
Labor Day, observed on September 7 this year, is a national holiday honoring the contributions of American workers and the labor movement.
For Houston, the occasion also highlights the breadth of the workforce behind the nation’s fourth-largest city — from first responders and public employees to healthcare workers, construction crews, transportation workers, energy professionals, small-business employees and service-sector workers.
The mayor’s message emphasized that Houston’s continued growth depends on the dedication of those workers across every industry.
City offices are closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday, with regular operations scheduled to resume Tuesday.
As Houston continues to expand as a major economic, energy and international hub, Labor Day offers an opportunity to recognize the workers whose efforts remain central to the city’s progress.
