Indian-American social and political activist Sarwar Khan has officially entered the race for Mayor of Sugar Land in the upcoming City Council elections in Houston. Having lived in the U.S. for over three decades, Khan is recognized not only as a prominent figure in Sugar Land but also as an influential social and political leader across the country.
“I Am Not a Politician, Just a Citizen Who Cares”
Speaking about his candidacy, Sarwar Khan emphasizes that he is not a politician, but rather an ordinary citizen of Sugar Land who wants to contribute to the betterment of his community. With experience in fleet management and certifications in human relations and health sciences, Khan believes that a balanced and positive approach is key to addressing local issues.
Outlining his vision for Sugar Land’s future, Khan has highlighted education, public safety, and the enhancement of essential services as his top priorities.

A Second Run for Mayor & a Call for Unity
Sarwar Khan previously ran for Mayor of Sugar Land in 2016 and is now making another attempt to serve the community. He has urged Asian-American residents to come together and work collectively to make Sugar Land a better city for future generations.
“Our goal is to transform Sugar Land into a modern, safe, and progressive city. We must prioritize unity, education, technology, and economic growth to ensure a bright future for all citizens,” Khan stated.
He further clarified that he is neither a Democrat nor a Republican, but rather an American first, who believes in collective efforts to enhance the city’s well-being.
Challenges & Collective Solutions
Acknowledging that Sugar Land, like other cities, faces certain challenges, Khan expressed confidence that these issues can be resolved through community-driven efforts. He encouraged residents to unite in identifying and solving problems that hinder progress.
“The success of our city depends on teamwork and dedication,” he affirmed.

Why is Sarwar Khan Running for Mayor?
When asked why he decided to run for mayor, Khan explained that his decade-long experience as a Sugar Land Board member and his participation in the previous mayoral elections have reinforced his commitment to the city’s growth, public safety, and beauty.
If elected, his top priority would be to halt the construction of a power plant that poses a threat to the environment and the city’s quality of life. Additionally, he aims to strengthen educational initiatives, ensuring that students and schools receive adequate resources to foster innovation and long-term success in Sugar Land.
Traffic & Infrastructure Planning
Khan also emphasized the importance of traffic management and urban planning to meet the needs of current and future residents. He aims to limit high-density residential projects, such as unnecessary apartment complexes, to reduce traffic congestion.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of collaborating with Richmond and Rosenberg to enhance developmental projects, particularly in establishing shopping malls and theaters that could potentially increase traffic flow in the future. Such strategic planning, he believes, will significantly reduce commute times and improve the daily lives of Sugar Land residents.
Election Timeline
The early voting period for Sugar Land’s City Council elections will take place from April 22 to April 29, while Election Day is scheduled for May 3, 2025.
