Houston, Sugar Land – More than 20 candidates have filed nominations for Sugar Land’s mayoral and city council elections, set to take place in May 2025. A significant number of these candidates are of Asian descent, particularly from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The large Asian community in Houston has already shown great enthusiasm for these elections. Whether the candidate is Pakistani-American or Indian-American, their supporters are actively participating in the election campaigns, hoping their preferred candidate secures victory and takes a keen interest in addressing community issues.
According to Jeronimo Cortina, a political science expert at the University of Houston, public interest in this year’s election is remarkably high. One major reason for this excitement is the vacant mayoral seat, which has encouraged several city council members to leave their positions and run for mayor.

Which Asian Candidates Are in the Race?
There are six candidates running for the mayor’s office, including Naushad Kermally and Sarwar Khan. Both candidates are Muslims and are determined to defeat their opponents in the race for Sugar Land’s top leadership position.

Why is the Mayor’s Seat Vacant?
Current Mayor Joe Zimmerman has completed his term limit and is ineligible to run for re-election. He initially filed to run for a city council position but later withdrew in February.

Four City Council Seats Also Up for Election
This year, elections will also be held for four city council seats in Sugar Land:
- At Large Position 1: George Kakkanat (Indian-American), Aqeel Virk, and Muzaffar Vohra (both Pakistani-Americans) are contesting.
- At Large Position 2: One of the two candidates is Ameer Malik, who is of Pakistani origin.
- District 2 Council Member: Candidates include Nasir Hussain (Pakistani-American) and Sanjay Singhal (Indian-American).
- District 4 Council Member: Two Indian-American women, Dr. Zeenat Mitha and Sapana Patel, are competing for this seat.
