A 13-year-old Houston teen, who has been battling brain cancer, received a special honor from President Donald Trump during his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.
Defying the Odds and Spreading Awareness
Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 10, and doctors initially gave him only five months to live. However, he has defied expectations and dedicated his time to raising awareness about childhood cancer while pursuing his dream of becoming a police officer.
Over the years, Daniel has been sworn in as an honorary officer by nearly 100 law enforcement agencies, including the Houston Police Department. On Tuesday, President Trump took his recognition a step further by making him an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service.
A Presidential Honor in Front of Congress
“Joining us in the gallery tonight is a young man who truly loves our police,” Trump said, as Daniel stood up proudly, dressed in a Houston Police Department uniform.

The President praised DJ’s dedication to law enforcement and announced, “I am asking our new Secret Service director Sean Curran to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service.”
A visibly emotional Daniel watched in amazement as members of Congress stood in applause. His father lifted him into the air as Secret Service Director Sean Curran presented him with his own official badge.
Rising to Fame and Overcoming Adversity
Daniel first gained regional recognition in 2022 when he was sworn in as an honorary Houston ISD police officer. However, his story went viral in 2024 after he was allegedly bullied at a Houston gas station for wearing his police uniform.
Trump Ties Tribute to Law Enforcement Support
During the event, Trump used Daniel’s story to highlight his administration’s support for law enforcement, stating:
“We’re also once again giving our police officers the support, protection, and respect they so dearly deserve. They have such a hard, dangerous job, but we’re going to make it less dangerous.”
The President also referenced his executive order mandating the death penalty for anyone convicted of murdering a police officer, urging Congress to codify it into law. However, legal experts have noted that death penalty enforcement varies across states, making implementation unclear.

A Moment of Inspiration
Daniel’s presence at the joint session of Congress was a powerful and uplifting moment, celebrating his resilience, bravery, and unwavering support for law enforcement. His recognition as an honorary Secret Service agent serves as a testament to his impact and the admiration he has earned nationwide.
