KATY, Texas – Two roadways in Katy have made the Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s (TTI) annual list of the 100 most congested roads statewide.

Key Findings

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reports that while statewide traffic delays have decreased by 7% since 2019 due to road improvements, congestion on segments of I-10 and the Grand Parkway in Katy has worsened over the past year.

Overview of TTI Report

  • The TTI evaluates congestion across 2,100 road segments, spanning approximately 10,000 miles of Texas roadways.
  • Initiated by the Texas Legislature in 2009, the study addresses urban road congestion and identifies critical improvements.
  • Road upgrades have saved commuters an estimated $915 million annually in time and fuel, with average drivers spending 34.5 fewer hours in traffic.

Details on Katy’s Most Congested Roads

  1. I-10 (Grand Parkway to North Eldridge Parkway)
    • Rank: 28th statewide
    • Annual delay: 3.63 million hours
    • Daily volume: 256,228 vehicles
    • Wasted fuel: 781,713 gallons
    • Cost of congestion: $99.1 million
  2. Grand Parkway (South Fry Road to Morton Ranch Road)
    • Rank: 61st statewide
    • Annual delay: 1.48 million hours
    • Daily volume: 79,684 vehicles
    • Wasted fuel: 281,314 gallons
    • Cost of congestion: $37.55 million

Comparative Trends

  • I-10 Segment: Ranked 34th in 2023, with an annual delay of 2.92 million hours, indicating a significant rise in congestion.
  • Grand Parkway Segment: Previously ranked 79th in 2023, with delays totaling 1.08 million hours annually.

Ongoing Road Improvements

Two Grand Parkway projects are underway to widen the road between I-10 and FM 1093. These $103 million projects will expand the road from four to six lanes and add a frontage road between Westheimer Parkway and Cinco Ranch Boulevard. Work began in 2023 and is expected to be completed by September 2025.

Statewide Context

  • Houston-area roads dominate the rankings, with five of the top 10 most congested segments in Texas.
  • The West Loop (Loop 610) retains its title as the state’s most congested road for the fourth year, costing drivers over $125 million annually.
  • The Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area accounts for 33 of Texas’ 100 most congested roads in 2024.
