The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced the introduction of a facial recognition system to enhance identity verification processes. This feature will be available nationwide at NADRA centers and on the PakID mobile app starting January 15, 2025.

Addressing Biometric Challenges

The decision was unveiled during a consultative conference held at NADRA headquarters, attended by stakeholders from regulators, financial institutions, and government bodies. The conference focused on improving the biometric and identity verification system, addressing issues like blurred fingerprints that disproportionately affect pensioners and senior citizens.

NADRA Chairman emphasized the need for alternative verification methods and highlighted the benefits of the upcoming facial recognition technology in streamlining access to services for citizens who face challenges with fingerprint-based verification.

Exploring Advanced Verification Methods

In addition to facial recognition, the conference also explored the potential of eye-tracking technology for identity verification. Discussions revolved around its applications, benefits, and potential challenges for institutions and citizens alike.

New Initiatives Unveiled

Officials at the conference were briefed on two major initiatives:

  1. National Registration and Biometric Policy Framework: Aimed at creating a unified policy for biometric systems across the country.
  2. Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP): Focused on advancing Pakistan’s digital economy and integrating cutting-edge technologies for secure identity verification.

Collaboration Across Institutions

The event highlighted the importance of cooperation among various regulatory and institutional bodies to implement these initiatives effectively. Attendees included representatives from the State Bank of Pakistan, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Federal Investigation Agency, Immigration and Passports Directorate, and more.

A Step Towards Efficient Service Delivery

Stakeholders welcomed the introduction of facial recognition technology, expressing confidence that it will reduce delays and improve service delivery for citizens. This initiative underscores NADRA’s commitment to leveraging technology for efficient and inclusive identity verification.
