Pakistan to host another ICC event

ICC to compensate PCB with a new event after India's withdrawal.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is poised to grant Pakistan another event following financial losses attributed to India’s refusal to play in the Champions Trophy.

PCB Governing Board Meeting

A meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Governing Board took place yesterday in Islamabad, chaired by Mohsin Naqvi. Key updates regarding the Champions Trophy were discussed during this session.

Negotiations Finalized

Sources indicate that Naqvi confirmed the completion of negotiations with both the ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Although there were delays in formalizing agreements, the Champions Trophy schedule is anticipated to be released in the coming days. Naqvi mentioned that India has agreed to compensate Pakistan for the financial losses incurred due to their team’s absence.Despite the offered financial compensation, Pakistan chose to prioritize national dignity over monetary gain. They proposed a model whereby neither country would send teams to the other’s territory for ICC events over the next three years.

In addition, the ICC has awarded Pakistan hosting rights for a Women’s Tournament in 2028. When concerns were raised about the absence of other tournaments in Pakistan during the next three years, the ICC reassured the PCB that an event would indeed take place in the country. This commitment is seen as a form of compensation for the financial impact of India’s withdrawal from the Champions Trophy.

Potential Measures from Pakistan

The meeting underscored that while the ICC will soon announce details for the Champions Trophy, the three-year agreement regarding team travel may not be disclosed immediately. Pakistan made it clear that if their demands are unmet, they might resort to drastic measures, though the specifics of these actions were not revealed.

Hybrid Model for 2025 Champions Trophy

In a significant development, the ICC has approved a hybrid model for the 2025 Champions Trophy, with Pakistan and Dubai set to co-host the tournament. This decision follows extensive discussions and an agreement between the PCB and the BCCI.

Match Distribution and Security Concerns

Under this new arrangement, matches will be shared between Pakistan and Dubai, addressing security and logistical concerns raised by various boards. The PCB and BCCI have also reached an understanding regarding the T20 World Cup 2026, confirming that Pakistan will not travel to India for their league-stage match. Instead, this high-profile game will occur in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Future Hosting Rights

Although the PCB will not receive financial compensation for these adjustments, they have secured hosting rights for an ICC Women’s tournament following 2027. The Champions Trophy is set to run from February 19 to March 9, 2025, with Pakistan as the defending champions, having won the title in 2017.

Match Schedule and Venue Details

The PCB will host 10 matches of the Champions Trophy, while all three of India’s league matches, including the highly anticipated clash against Pakistan, will be held in Dubai. The semifinals and final are also scheduled for Dubai; however, if India is eliminated after the group stage, those matches will be moved to Lahore and Rawalpindi in Pakistan.

Ongoing Tensions

Tensions between India and Pakistan have prevented the two nations from engaging in bilateral series since the 2012-13 season, with both teams only competing in ICC events and the Asia Cup. India has not played in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup due to ongoing political strains.A similar hybrid model was previously implemented during the 2023 men’s 50-over Asia Cup, where India played their matches, including the semifinals and final, in Colombo, while Pakistan hosted the remainder of the tournament.
