Canada-Texas Energy Trade in Focus at CERAWeek 2025
Houston Hosts Global Energy Talks
The CERAWeek by S&P Global conference is underway in Houston, gathering global energy leaders and government officials at the George R. Brown Convention Center and Hilton Americas-Houston. The event runs through Friday, March 14, 2025, featuring discussions on energy trade, policy, and future strategies.
Canada’s Energy Future Takes Center Stage
During a panel discussion titled “Giant of the North: Canada’s Energy Future,” Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe highlighted the strong energy trade relationship between Canada and Texas.
“We export about $10.9 billion in crude petroleum to Texas and import over $11 billion back. Surprisingly, we have a trade deficit with Texas because we import more petroleum than we produce,” Moe said.
Tariffs and Trade Tensions
The panelists also addressed trade challenges, including U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports. While President Donald Trump’s remarks about annexing Canada were dismissed as “annoying and not taken seriously,” the ongoing tariff disputes have added strain to U.S.-Canada relations.
Canada’s Key Role in Global Energy
As the world’s fourth-largest oil producer, Canada exports the majority of its oil to the U.S., with Alberta contributing the largest share. Texas remains a key player in this trade relationship, reinforcing the deep energy ties between the two nations.
