Sugar Land officials, alongside OnPoint EV Solutions, officially inaugurated 10 new electric vehicle charging stations on Dec. 9 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the Sugar Land Regional Airport and Imperial Park.

Fast and Convenient Charging Options Introduced

Four Super-Fast DC Fast Charging Level 3 stations have been installed at the regional airport. These chargers, among the fastest publicly available, are capable of charging most electric vehicles from 20% to 80% in just 20 to 30 minutes.

In addition, six Level 2 charging stations have been set up at Imperial Park. These chargers are designed to provide a full vehicle charge over the course of a few hours, making them ideal for park visitors and recreational users.

City Officials Highlight Customer-Focused Approach

Assistant Director of Aviation Ken Durbin stated that the goal of the project was to offer top-tier EV charging facilities for both airport users and park visitors. He noted that the stations improve accessibility and convenience for drivers while they travel or take part in leisure activities.

Enhanced Features at Both Locations

The charging sites include several upgraded amenities aimed at improving safety, comfort, and usability. These features include solar or traditional canopies, LED lighting, high-speed internet access, security cameras, digital kiosks showcasing local businesses, and curbside service options.

The stations will also support Sugar Land On-Demand, the city’s newly launched microtransit service.

Project Background and Financial Details

City Council approved the EV charging project in July, entering into a 10-year agreement with OnPoint for the construction, operation, and maintenance of the stations. The $1.6 million project required no capital investment from the city.

Under the agreement, Sugar Land will receive $215 per month for each EV parking spot, with an annual increase of 3.5%. OnPoint will also pay a 10% utilization bonus for each station that reaches at least 6% annual usage, as outlined in agenda documents.

Expansion Plans Underway

Looking ahead, the city plans to install four additional DC Fast Charging stations at the airport in the coming weeks. Officials also confirmed that the charging infrastructure at Imperial Park can be expanded further as demand continues to grow.
