A Grand Welcome at Hobby Airport
Travelers passing through William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) will now be greeted by a vibrant, larger-than-life art piece. On January 29, iconic sculptor David Adickes installed the second of his famous I Love Houston sculptures along the Arrivals Curb. The piece is set to move to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) later this year.
A Love Letter to Houston
“This is my love letter to the city,” Adickes shared. “It’s fun, lasting, and the perfect selfie spot — my granddaughters and Houston arts fans say so!”
The 98-year-old artist, known for his monumental works, has left an indelible mark on Houston and Texas history. His creations include the towering 67-foot Sam Houston statue in Huntsville, the famed Mount Rush Hour busts along I-10, and a massive tribute to The Beatles.
A Selfie-Worthy Masterpiece
Crafted from cement, canvas, and steel, We Love Houston, Too measures 30 feet wide and 16.5 feet tall. The colorful piece is sure to flood Instagram feeds as travelers capture memories at this unique installation.
Houston Airports: A Hub for Art
Since 1999, Houston airports have showcased art as part of a city mandate allocating 1.75% of public building improvement funds to artistic enhancements. Installations like Dale Chihuly’s glass flower masterpiece at IAH and art cars celebrating legendary musicians have transformed these spaces into cultural landmarks.
Alton DuLaney, Curator of Public and Cultural Arts for Houston Airports, highlighted the impact of art in elevating the travel experience.
“Art makes our airports cultural gateways that reflect Houston’s vibrant spirit,” DuLaney said. “As North America’s only 5-Star Skytrax-rated airport, Hobby Airport showcases world-class hospitality. We’re proud to feature David Adickes’ iconic work because we love Houston, too.”
