In a heartfelt Facebook statement, Cypress Radio honored Sayre’s contributions:

A Radio Career Spanning Over Five Decades
Sayre’s journey in radio began with a blues show at 88.7 KUHF before he became a staple in Houston’s radio scene. Over 52 years, he worked at stations like Z107.5, KLDE, KIKK, and KLOL, making his mark as a Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee in 2009.

Known initially as Scott St. James, he adopted the name Colonel St. James during his time at KLOL, where he led the station’s “Rock N’ Roll Army.” He continued his legacy as the afternoon host at Cypress Radio 103.5, working until his final day.

A Legacy Remembered by Many
Tributes flooded social media as fans and colleagues celebrated Sayre’s influence. Josh Holstead, Texas Radio Hall of Fame director emeritus, reflected:
“He worked hard for others when he could have focused on his own legacy. That’s how I’ll remember him.”

Doug Harris, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame’s executive director, described Sayre as a “pioneering voice” in rock radio, adding:
“He was a friend to listeners and artists alike, leaving an indelible mark on Houston radio.”

Honoring His Memory Through Broadcasts
Cypress Radio plans to celebrate Sayre’s life by airing his archived shows during his regular time slot from 3-6 p.m. on select days. In a statement, the station shared:
“With his family’s blessing, we are honored to share his incredible legacy, ensuring his voice and spirit remain a part of our community.”

Joe Sayre’s passing leaves a void in Houston’s radio community, but his impact and voice will continue to resonate with those who tuned in and admired his work.
