City Prepares for Freezing Temperatures
HOUSTON – The City of Houston is getting ready for a significant drop in temperatures, with lows expected in the 30s. City officials are urging residents to prepare and stay safe. The Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the weather and implementing measures to protect the community.
“This is not a February 2021 event, so there’s no need to panic. However, it’s always wise to have a plan in place,” said Ruth Tovar, Public Information Officer for the Office of Emergency Management.
Star of Hope Supports Houston’s Homeless During Cold Snap
The non-profit Star of Hope is stepping up to protect the city’s homeless population as dangerously cold weather approaches. Their shelters, already at full capacity, house approximately 500 women and children and 300 men.
“With weather like this, our shelters quickly fill up,” said Scott Arthur, Director of Public Relations for Star of Hope.
The organization’s Love in Action Van will distribute warm clothing, blankets, and other necessities to those in need.
Freezing Weather Expected Across Southeast Texas
A strong cold front has brought storms to Southeast Texas, followed by freezing temperatures. A Freeze Warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Monday, with wind chills making it feel like temperatures are in the teens or 20s.
Residents are advised to:
- Dress in layers.
- Bring pets indoors.
- Limit time outdoors.
Afternoon highs will stay in the 40s, with mornings near freezing. While the chance of wintry precipitation is low, weather models may update. Stay informed through local news and weather apps.
Tips for Staying Safe During the Freeze
The City of Houston emphasizes the “Four P’s” of cold weather preparedness:
- People: Stay warm, check on elderly neighbors, and help those with special needs.
- Pets: Bring pets indoors or provide them with warm shelter.
- Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes to prevent freezing.
- Plants: Protect sensitive plants by bringing them indoors or covering them.
“Being prepared ahead of time is key,” said Tovar.
How to Help Houston’s Homeless
Star of Hope is seeking donations to support their efforts during the cold spell. Items needed include socks, gloves, jackets, and blankets. Donations can be dropped off at:

- Cornerstone Community Location: 2575 Reed Road at Highway 288
Drop-off hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
