David Roberts, 73, Whitney Houston’s former bodyguard, recently shared heartfelt insights into his years protecting the legendary singer. Speaking to Daily Mail, Roberts recounted their bond and the challenges he faced during his tenure, which spanned from 1988 to 1995.
A Bond That Almost Crossed Professional Lines
In a rare confession, the Welsh-born former officer revealed a poignant moment when Houston rested her head on his shoulder, making him question their professional boundaries.
“There was temptation,” he admitted, “but if you cross that line, you lose objectivity, putting the person you protect at risk.”
Roberts likened their dynamic to the 1992 movie The Bodyguard, which mirrored aspects of their relationship.
“That’s why Frank Farmer and Rachel Marron couldn’t be together in the film—it compromised his role,” he explained.
Real-Life Inspiration for The Bodyguard
Roberts revealed that many details from the movie were drawn from their real-life experiences.
“For instance, the way Rachel held onto Frank’s shirt to navigate through crowds—that was our reality,” he shared.
A Treasured Note from 1988
Roberts cherishes a faded Post-it note Houston slid under his hotel door in Hong Kong in 1988.
“It’s over 35 years old now, but it’s still precious to me,” he said.
