In a significant move to bridge the gender-based digital divide, Pakistan announced plans on Friday to establish its first women-focused software technology park in Azad Kashmir. The park is slated to launch in February and aims to empower women in the tech sector.
Government’s Vision for IT Expansion
The initiative is part of a broader government strategy introduced in May, which aims to set up 10 new software technology parks across Pakistan by next year, including one in Islamabad. These parks will feature state-of-the-art incubation centers and other facilities to foster start-ups, boost IT exports, and promote gender inclusivity in the tech industry.
Commitment to Gender Inclusivity
Speaking at a Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) meeting, Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, highlighted the significance of the project. “This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for women and their active participation in Pakistan’s digital economy,” she stated.
Currently, 20% of the workforce in PSEB-supported software technology parks comprises women IT professionals, a number the government aims to increase through this initiative.
Growing Pakistan’s Digital Economy
The country’s 43 IT parks employ over 18,000 export professionals. Since 2020, PSEB programs have facilitated over 10,000 job placements through targeted training, certifications, and internships.
Looking ahead, the PSEB plans to empower 25,000 freelancers by 2027 by establishing 250 e-Employment Centers, further expanding Pakistan’s IT footprint on the global stage.
