HOUSTON, Texas — November 2, 2026

Pakistani literature, poetry, arts and intellectual dialogue took centre stage in the Greater Houston area as the third Pakistan Literature Festival brought together writers, poets, scholars, diplomats, journalists and members of the community for a two-day celebration of Pakistan’s literary and cultural heritage.

Organized by the International Academy of Letters USA (IAL USA), the festival took place on October 31 and November 1 at venues in Sugar Land and Stafford, offering a platform for discussions on literature, society, media, leadership, culture and Pakistan’s place in the wider world.

Led by IAL USA President Ghazanfar Hashmi, the festival aimed to promote cultural exchange and strengthen connections through literature, artistic expression and public dialogue. The organization describes cultural and public diplomacy as central to its mission, with a focus on building relationships between communities and nations.

From Urdu literature to contemporary social issues

The first day, held at the Ismaili Jamatkhana and Center in Sugar Land, featured a programme covering several dimensions of Pakistani cultural and intellectual life.

Discussions included Pakistani cinema and television drama, changing perspectives on leadership across generations, mental health awareness, the contribution of women to Urdu poetry and the relationship between literature and society.

The programme also included an opening session, book and cultural activities, dinner and a Sufi music evening titled Sham-e-Ishq.

The diversity of subjects reflected the festival’s broader approach: bringing literature into conversation with the social, cultural and intellectual questions shaping contemporary Pakistani society.

Iqbal, diplomacy and the role of media

The second day, held at the Hilton Tuscany Ballroom at Spark by Hilton in Stafford, expanded the conversation to include literature, national identity, diplomacy and journalism.

One of the featured discussions focused on Allama Muhammad Iqbal, exploring his poetry and ideas under the session title Iqbal: The Poet of All Ages.

Another session featured a conversation with former Pakistani diplomat Ambassador Zamir Akram about his book, The Security Imperative: Pakistan’s Nuclear Deterrence and Diplomacy. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Asaf Qadeer.

Media and journalism also received attention through a panel titled Navigating Pakistani Media: Truth and Responsibility. The published programme listed journalists and commentators Absar Alam, Raza Rumi, Shahab Zuberi, Ashraf Shad, Atif Tauqir, Fazil Jamili and Khurram Shahzad among the participants, with Ghazanfar Hashmi as moderator.

The programme also included a conversation with Shabbar Zaidi, moderated by Nasira Zuberi and Ghazanfar Hashmi, followed by the festival’s closing ceremony and a mushaira.

A cultural connection across generations

For Houston’s Pakistani-American community, literary festivals offer more than an opportunity to celebrate language and heritage. They provide a space where people from different generations can exchange ideas, engage with contemporary issues and maintain connections with their cultural roots.

For younger Pakistani-Americans, such gatherings can create opportunities to explore Urdu literature, poetry and history while engaging with the experiences and perspectives of older generations.

The festival also welcomed the wider community, including students, families, academics, artists and anyone interested in Pakistani and South Asian culture.

Cultural diplomacy beyond the festival

The International Academy of Letters USA, established in 2017, describes itself as a nonprofit, non-governmental organization working to promote cultural and public diplomacy through dialogue and intercultural relationships.

In a separate announcement, the organization said the award distribution ceremony and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Pakistan’s National Heritage and Culture Division had been rescheduled for November 6, 2026, at the Hilton Tuscany Ballroom in Stafford. The change followed the official engagements of Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, who was announced as the chief guest.

The planned ceremony represents a further effort to develop institutional connections around literature, arts and cultural exchange.

As Houston continues to serve as a home to communities with roots across the world, events such as the Pakistan Literature Festival provide an opportunity to bring cultural heritage into a broader conversation about identity, creativity and international understanding.
