WILLIS, Texas: Security measures at Willis High School are being significantly tightened after a series of firearm-related incidents since the beginning of the 2026–27 school year.

Starting Tuesday, September 22, students entering the campus will be screened with metal detectors and backpacks will be searched, according to reports following the latest gun discovery at the school. The move comes after a loaded firearm was found in a student’s backpack on Monday, September 21. The student was detained and the weapon was confiscated. No injuries were reported.

The latest incident began with a report from another student. School officials and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office school resource officers responded, placed the campus on a temporary hold and located the student with the firearm. Additional deputies and increased patrols were planned as a precaution.

A series of incidents raises concern

The latest case follows two firearm-related incidents in late August.

On August 26, a 14-year-old student was taken into custody after a loaded gun was found in her backpack during a school check. Authorities said there was no threat made against the school or classmates, and the student reportedly said she did not know the gun was in the backpack.

The following day, a 15-year-old student was detained and charged with making a terroristic threat after allegedly making a statement about shooting other students in a classroom. Authorities said the student claimed it was a joke.

A parent-led petition published September 21 describes four firearm-related incidents during the semester, but that figure has not been independently confirmed by the school district or law enforcement in the sources reviewed for this article.

What the new security measures mean

Metal detectors are designed to identify weapons containing metal as people enter a building. Backpack searches add another layer by allowing school personnel to identify prohibited items that may not be detected through normal entry screening.

These measures, however, are only one part of school security. Willis ISD already lists several safety measures, including fenced and gated campus perimeters, surveillance systems monitored by law enforcement and administration, school resource officers, emergency communication systems and safety training. The district also uses metal detectors and clear-bag rules at Yates Stadium and other sporting or district events.

The district says its school division works with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to support campus safety while operating within federal, state and local legal requirements.

Why this matters to Houston’s Pakistani-American families

For Pakistani-American families living in the greater Houston area, the Willis situation is a reminder that school safety is not limited to major urban campuses.

Families who have recently moved to the United States may be less familiar with the terminology used during school emergencies. Terms such as “hold,” “lockdown,” “secure” and “shelter” can describe different levels of emergency response, and parents should know how their child’s school communicates during an incident.

Parents should also make sure children understand a basic rule: if they see a weapon, hear a credible threat or notice suspicious behavior, they should immediately tell a teacher, counselor, school administrator or law enforcement officer rather than confronting the situation themselves.

Willis ISD says it has an emergency communication system that allows teachers and administrators to notify campus staff and call 911 during an emergency. The district also provides an emergency guide for families.

A broader lesson for parents

The Willis case also highlights an important part of school safety: prevention does not depend only on security equipment.

Parents can help by regularly checking backpacks used for school, discussing school rules with children, taking threats seriously and encouraging students to report concerning behavior. The school district has previously reminded families to check backpacks for prohibited items.

For families in the Willis area, the high school operates regular school hours from 7:15 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. during the 2026–27 school year. Willis High School can be contacted at 936-856-1250 for campus-specific questions.

The immediate focus at Willis High School is now on screening students, preventing weapons from entering the campus and maintaining a safe environment for students and staff as the investigation into the recent incidents continues.

Houston Tribune will continue to follow school safety developments that affect Houston-area families, including the Pakistani-American community.
