University of Houston Implements TikTok Ban on Wireless Networks

Starting January, the University of Houston will block access to TikTok on its wireless networks for students, staff, and visitors. This decision is part of a new technology policy announced this week.

New Restrictions on TikTok and Other ByteDance Apps

Under the updated policy, employees and contract workers are prohibited from installing TikTok or any other app created by the Chinese company ByteDance on personal devices used for university business. This includes messaging apps or devices used to access university email accounts.

Impact on University Business

The policy clearly states that employees cannot conduct university business on any device containing prohibited technology. To use a personal device for university work, individuals must remove the restricted apps.

Senate Bill 1893 and State Legislation

The restrictions come in response to Senate Bill 1893 passed during the 88th Legislative Session. This bill mandates that state agencies and local government entities establish policies to ban TikTok due to national security concerns. Texas Governor Greg Abbott emphasized that TikTok poses a threat from the Chinese government, citing its data harvesting practices.

Compliance Deadline for Government Entities

Texas agencies had until November 2024 to adopt policies aligned with these new restrictions, as clarified by the Texas Department of Information Resources. The University of Houston’s policy was implemented following this directive.

Other Texas Institutions Follow Suit

Other universities in Texas, such as the University of Texas at Austin, have already started blocking TikTok on their Wi-Fi networks. The University of Houston will also block the application on university-issued devices and take additional steps to enforce the restriction.

Exceptions to the Ban

There are some exceptions to the TikTok ban. Law enforcement, researchers, and teachers incorporating TikTok in their curriculum can apply for an exemption. However, these exceptions require a formal request and approval from the university’s chancellor.

No Clear Penalties Outlined

The new policy does not specify penalties for students or employees who violate the TikTok ban. However, all university employees will be required to acknowledge their understanding of the policy annually.

TikTok Legal Challenges Loom

The policy arrives amid ongoing legal challenges surrounding TikTok. The Supreme Court is set to review a law that could potentially lead to a ban of the app unless it is sold by next month.

This policy aligns with the federal mandate passed earlier this year, which also demands the app’s removal unless sold within a year.
