KATY, Texas – Katy Mills Mall shoppers faced moments of terror Monday evening when an unidentified individual opened fire inside the mall, prompting a chaotic evacuation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Katy Police Chief Bryon Woytek revealed that the shooter, accompanied by another man, fled the scene shortly after the gunshots. “They entered together and left together,” Woytek stated, noting that descriptions of the suspects are currently limited.
The incident occurred at 5:19 p.m. in a common area of the mall. Bullets struck a pillar and shattered the front window of Rack Room Shoes. Store employee Laiba Memon described the fear that ensued: “We heard two quick gunshots. At first, we weren’t sure if it was gunfire, but then we saw people running. We had to duck, hide, and get everyone to safety. It was terrifying.”
Police quickly arrived at the scene, joined by deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez later confirmed there was no active shooter and labeled the event an isolated incident.
Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage and urging the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the suspects. Chief Woytek added, “It’s unclear if the intent was to cause chaos, but the investigation is still in its early stages.”
For now, the motive remains a mystery, and the search for answers continues.
