Houston Mayor John Whitmire has welcomed the creation of a new state task force announced by Governor Greg Abbott, aimed at addressing the rise of violent crime in Houston and Harris County. The mayor called the initiative a timely and much-needed step to strengthen city–state cooperation in ensuring public safety.
Stronger State and Local Partnership
According to Mayor Whitmire, the City of Houston has already been working closely with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and this new task force will further reinforce those efforts.
“Additional state resources will strengthen our city’s fight against violent crime,” Whitmire stated, emphasizing that this expanded collaboration represents a united front for law enforcement and community safety.
Technology and Aerial Support Enhancing Policing
The mayor highlighted the importance of DPS technology and helicopter support, explaining that aerial assistance enables safer pursuits and arrests.
He also noted that the new task force will provide additional personnel, advanced forensic tools, investigative technology, and scientific support—resources that are currently limited within the Houston Police Department (HPD).
Increased Police Visibility for Safer Communities
Whitmire assured residents that they will soon see more police presence across Houston’s streets and neighborhoods. The goal, he said, is to deter criminal activity, improve response times, and reduce violent incidents citywide.

“This initiative is about making Houston safer for everyone,” said Whitmire. “By combining local dedication with state-level resources, we can protect our citizens more effectively and bring lasting peace to our communities.”
The launch of this joint task force marks a significant step in Texas’s broader effort to tackle violent crime, boost law enforcement capacity, and build stronger public trust through visible and effective policing.
