Texas Awards $30.9 Million in Park Grants: Harris County Secures Over $3.4 Million

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission (TPWD) recently announced a record-breaking $30.9 million in grants for local park projects across the state. Out of this, parks in Harris County were awarded more than $3.4 million. These grants aim to enhance community parks with new amenities, ensuring they remain vibrant spaces for recreation and nature.

Enhancing Community Spaces Across Texas

The TPWD’s funding will benefit 50 community parks statewide. Planned upgrades include nature trails, playgrounds, splash pads, sports fields, kayak launches, piers, and native landscaping. The grants were allocated based on community population and project scope.

Harris County Parks: Key Projects and Allocations

  • John Paul Landing Environmental Education Center, Cypress: $468,724 for improvements.
  • Edgewater Park, Humble: $763,406 for playground equipment, landscaping, restrooms, parking, and trail access (Precinct #3).
  • Little Cedar Bayou Bridges Project, La Porte: $177,513 for a bird observation pier and pedestrian bridge upgrades.
  • Mason Park Community Center, Houston: $2 million for significant upgrades to its facilities.

Mason Park, located at 541 S. 75th St. in Houston’s East End, is a 104-acre community gem with fields for baseball, softball, and soccer, as well as tennis courts, playgrounds, and a swimming pool. The gym and recreation center were last upgraded in 1986, while the community center has not been updated since 1995.

Additional Grant for Galveston

The City of Galveston received $375,000 to renovate Jones Park. Planned upgrades include new trails, a basketball court, landscaping, and irrigation.

With these investments, Texas aims to create accessible, sustainable, and enjoyable park spaces for all residents.
